What affects the cost of a website?

1. Number of pages

A 5-page brochure site needs far less design, writing and testing than a 30-page site with services, locations and case studies.

2. Design: template or custom

A tailored design that reflects your brand costs more than an off-the-shelf template, but usually converts better and looks more professional.

3. Content and copywriting

Good words sell. If your agency writes the content, expect to pay more – but it’s often the best money you’ll spend.

4. Features and integrations

Online booking, property feeds, payments, membership areas or CRM integrations all add development time.

5. eCommerce

Online shops need product setup, payments, delivery rules, stock management and extra security, which adds cost.

6. SEO and speed

A site built with SEO and performance in mind costs a little more upfront but saves money on marketing later.

Ongoing website costs

  • Domain name: around £10–£20 a year
  • Hosting: £5–£30 a month for most small businesses
  • Maintenance: £30–£110 a month for updates, backups and security
  • Business email: around £5 per user per month (e.g. Microsoft 365)
  • SEO and marketing: optional, typically from £199 a month

A cheap website with no ongoing care can end up costing more if it’s hacked, breaks after an update or never brings in enquiries.

Cheap vs professional: what you really get

A £300 website might look fine at first glance, but often uses a heavy template, has no SEO, loads slowly on phones and leaves you on your own when something goes wrong. A professionally built website is an investment: if it brings in just one or two extra customers a month, it usually pays for itself within the first year.

Our advice: decide what a new customer is worth to you, and budget for a website that can realistically bring in enough of them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a website cost for a small business in the UK?

Most small businesses pay between £800 and £2,500 for a professionally built website, plus hosting and a domain. Our small business websites start from £1,000.

Is it cheaper to build my own website?

DIY builders cost less upfront but take a lot of your time and often perform poorly on Google. Many businesses later pay to have them rebuilt.

Do I have to pay monthly for a website?

You’ll need hosting and a domain. Maintenance, SEO and support plans are optional but recommended.

How can I reduce the cost of my website?

Start with the essential pages, supply your own photos and text if you can, and add features later. A good agency will help you prioritise.
